Stuck for ideas on what to get loved ones for Christmas this year… There’s still time to purchase an entry to the Geneva Marathon for Unicef as a Christmas gift for an enthusiastic runner in your family or a friend to help kick-start their New Year get-fit training programme. Geneva has excellent travel links and whether you feel they can take on the full Marathon, the Half Marathon or La Genevoise (6km for women), the event is sure to give them a fantastic weekend and a great feeling of achievement. We thought of the youngest one too, as four different races for kids aged 6 to 13 will be held on the Saturday on marked routes. Don’t forget, 5% of the entry fee of adult races and 100% of Junior races will go directly to Unicef, so your gift will also be supporting the installation of water pumps in countries that are in urgent need.

Since entries opened on 25th October, running enthusiasts have rushed to sign up for the 2012 edition of the Geneva Marathon for Unicef. Benjamin Chandelier, Event Director says: “We are really pleased with the number of participants who have registered so far. We managed to launch the entry process earlier than last year and have received a great response from hundreds of keen athletes. Runners aged 6 to 76 have already signed up and we are confident that we will exceed our 2011 record in terms of the number of people taking part.”

The event is attracting runners from all corners of the globe, with competitors already signed up from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, Kenya, Russia, and South Africa. With a conveniently located international airport, the organisers have teamed up with premium hotel chain Manotel to offer participants a special deal on accommodation packages purchased for the event to encourage those traveling from abroad. The Marathon will be the highlight of a weekend-long running festival as participants enjoy the Marathon (26-mile / 42.195km) course set against the stunning backdrop of one of most beautiful cities in the world and the surrounding countryside of the Alps and Jura mountains. The Half Marathon (13-mile / 21,097km) will be run simultaneously, with the course laid out in the shadow of the Jet d’Eau fountain and have the same start and finish lines as the Marathon, just covering a shorter distance (both routes were met with high praise by competitors, scoring an average of 18 out of 20 for their beauty and accessibility). On Saturday 5th May, a variety of junior races between 500m and 3km (for 6 -13 year olds) and “La Genevoise”, a 6km race dedicated to women will also be held from the ‘new look’ race village on the shores of Lake Geneva.

The Geneva Marathon for Unicef has grown considerably in recent years and the organizers are investing heavily to position the event to become one of the Top 15 Marathons in Europe by 2015. For the first time in its history, the Geneva Marathon for Unicef will leave the lake’s right bank and the famous Palais Wilson square and then head to the left bank where the space is better suited to the organisation of an internationally renowned marathon. “It is really important for us to provide the best possible experience for our participants and their supporters. “The new Marathon Village set up will allow us to welcome more runners and spectators in an area that will be bigger and better equipped than ever. Within the dedicated arrival area will a full selection of services for the runners including a massage area and food stations, and close by plenty of partner stands and exhibitions will provide entertainment for the whole family.”

This will be the 8th edition of the Marathon, and around 70 people have competed in ALL the editions so far. As a special reward to those dedicated participants who have run every year, the organizers have given a 50% discount on their entry fee for 2012.
